Fees for Schools and Transportation receives approval for 2017-18

On June 5, 2017 the Government of Alberta signed Bill 1: An Act to Reduce School Fees bringing the resulting School Fees and Costs Regulation and School Transportation Regulation into the operations for school boards.  As part of the requirements under the legislation and regulations, school divisions must have a board policy for school fees and transportation fees that must contain the information required under the regulations.  Also, a schedule of fees for all schools and transportation must be approved by the end of June.

At the June 29, 2017 Board Meeting, the Board approved Policy 31 and the new fee schedule.  The fee schedule and policy was submitted to the Alberta Government for their approval and review.  During the summer, the Alberta Government approved the fee schedule for 2017-18.

To access the fee schedule and process for waiving or reducing fees, the website has now been updated:

As part of the regulation, parents and legal guardians must be aware of the fees and the process for waiving fees. To this end, please note there is now an application for waiving or reducing fees, and using the above link are three main categories: "Transportation Services Fees", "School Fees" and "Waiving or Reducing Fees".  Information on waiving or reducing fees can be found in the above link.

Fees are broken down by school and category, including "ANNUAL ONE-TIME" and "ANNUAL MAX".

  • "ANNUAL ONE-TIME" fees are assessed at one time during the school year, usually at the beginning of the year and include fees for bulk supplies, optional courses, full-day kindergarten, non-curricular goods and services, and fees to enhance education.

  • "ANNUAL MAX" fees are fees charged throughout the school year to recover the costs of student activities. Amounts shown are the annual maximum that may be charged in any school year. Actual fees would typically be less, such as where there is less activity, less costs related to the activity, or there is fundraising. Such fees include field trips, sports teams, and extracurricular activities.
