The proposed amendments will seek to continue to allow schools to maintain a reasonable level of reserve dollars from prior years to be used in the current year or future years, and for dollars above the determined level to be held in a capital reserve account available to the respective school for future capital purchases.

The proposed changes are being reviewed due to the Alberta Government's legislation that allows the Alberta Government to regulate the amount of dollar reserves (unspent dollars) available to school pisions.

Should the proposed changes proceed, where a school is above the guidelines for operating reserves at August 31, 2022 (end of the 2021-22 fiscal year), 50% of the amounts above the guidelines would be recovered to a capital reserve for the respective school. Should a school not access the capital reserve in a period of time, the amounts may be recovered and used for other priorities.

Please review the proposed amendments (Section 4.6) and provide any feedback for consideration by Monday, September 13, 2021.

FIRST READING was done on August 25, 2021.

SECOND READING is planned for September 15, 2021.

The Board of Trustees may provide THIRD AND FINAL READING on October 6, 2021 or a future date.
