Information for Families Regarding ATA Strike Authorization Vote
Dear Clearview Families,
We want to share an important update regarding recent developments involving the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA).
The ATA recently held a strike authorization vote. This was not a vote to go on strike, but it does give the ATA a strong mandate to take back to the bargaining table or to apply for a formal strike vote supervised by the Alberta Labour Relations Board. The ATA subsequently filed an application with the Labour Relations Board for a supervised strike vote, which is scheduled to take place from June 5 to June 8.
It is important to note that the ATA is bargaining at the provincial level with the Teacher Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) — a body that includes representatives from the Alberta government and all school divisions. Local school divisions such as Clearview are not directly involved in this phase of negotiations.
If this strike vote is successful, it would be valid for 120 days. Should the ATA choose to proceed with strike action, they would be required to give 72 hours’ notice and it is possible that teachers could move forward with some sort of job action after June 11th.
We understand families may have questions about graduations, diploma exams, provincial achievement tests, year-end field trips, and other school activities. At this time, we do not yet have specific answers. However, we are actively planning for various possibilities and will continue to follow provincial guidance throughout this process. You can expect regular updates from us as we receive more information.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
Sincerely,
Scot Leys
Superintendent
